This was a good sketch that starts to explain how Europe got to be where it is today. I made me take a look at more detailed books.
Elementary, but a good, clear summary of events
fast read; very informative
Absolutely engrossing!! an excellent source of historical facts and information, you will not be disappointed.
It is a place I n vanilla account of facts, somewhat chronologically ordered. A map showing locations would be nice plus.
Reads like a narrative. As the story unfolded, some of the important figures were not named until later, but I had already "guessed" who they were. An interesting point of view, and a very astute final assumption about the coming events (meaning WWI,) given that the book was published ~18 years before the outbreak.
As the title implies, this is a brief history of Germany from the early tribes to the end of the 19th century. While brief, glossing over many details, it is also well written, almost poetic at times, and provides a useful summary of the overall flow of history for the Germanic tribes. As an old history (published 1892) it also provides a glimpse into the perspectives of that time, unhindered by a century of hindsight.
